What is the KA-BAR 1249 Kukri Machete designed for?

The KA-BAR 1249 Kukri Machete takes one of the oldest and most devastatingly effective chopping profiles in the world and modernizes it for extreme backcountry use. Featuring an 11.5-inch forward-swept blade, this design inherently shifts the weight and balance point toward the tip. This unique geometry naturally generates massive forward momentum during a swing, allowing the machete to bite significantly deeper into thick timber and heavy brush than a traditional straight blade. The slip-resistant TPR (Thermoplastic Rubber) handle is deeply contoured with a flared pommel to keep the tool securely locked in your hand during high-velocity impacts.

How does the KA-BAR 1249 perform in the field?

Built to withstand severe abuse, the 1249 is forged from tough SK5 steel and heat-treated to a specialized 52-54 Rockwell Hardness. This lower hardness rating is a critical requirement for a heavy chopper—it maximizes shock absorption, ensuring the 0.165-inch thick blade flexes on impact instead of chipping or shattering when striking dense hardwood. The hollow grind and 20-degree edge angle deliver aggressive material removal, while a baked-on black powder coating provides excellent primary resistance against the elements.

How do you maintain and carry the KA-BAR 1249?

Because SK5 is a true high-carbon alloy, the exposed cutting edge will rust if stored wet. Simply wipe the blade down after clearing brush or processing camp firewood, and apply a light coat of protective blade oil. The Kukri includes a heavy-duty black Hard Plastic/Cordura® sheath to provide secure carry while navigating dense environments.
