What is the KA-BAR 1248 Cutlass Machete designed for?

The KA-BAR 1248 Cutlass Machete is a heavy-duty hybrid designed to bridge the gap between a large tactical fixed blade and a full-size agricultural machete. Featuring an 11.0-inch recurved blade, this tool drives massive forward momentum into every swing, making it exceptionally efficient for chopping down thick weeds, blazing trails, and clearing camp sites. The extended, slip-resistant TPR (Thermoplastic Rubber) handle features a flared pommel that securely locks your hand in place during heavy, repetitive chopping motions.

How does the KA-BAR 1248 perform in the field?

Unlike standard KA-BAR combat knives, the 1248 is forged from tough SK5 steel. It is heat-treated to a specialized 52-54 Rockwell Hardness. This slightly lower hardness rating is a critical, intentional feature for a heavy chopper—it maximizes shock absorption, ensuring the blade flexes instead of chipping or shattering when striking dense hardwood. The 0.165-inch thick blade utilizes a hollow grind to deliver deep, aggressive bites into timber while keeping the overall weight down. A baked-on black powder coating provides excellent primary resistance against the elements.

How do you maintain and carry the KA-BAR 1248?

Because SK5 is a true high-carbon alloy, the exposed cutting edge will rust if put away wet. Wipe the blade down after clearing brush or processing camp firewood, and apply a light coat of protective blade oil. The Cutlass includes a black Hard Plastic/Cordura® sheath to provide secure carry while navigating dense environments.
